no good August 9, 2010 jason kaminsky poorly stitched. stitching came off zipper portion after 2 weeks' use. not as roomy as described or as appears. trying to return for full refund, but bought it 3 months ago. no good.
Roomy & Sturdy Carryon, but Hard-to-Manage Zippers June 8, 2010 D. Depp (Greenville, SC) This backpack was just the right size to fall within the maximum parameters allowed as a carryon. One reviewer said that the actual dimensions did not match the description, but I did not find this to be the case. It is a very roomy and sturdy bag. I needed the maximum allowable space for a flight to India. I needed it to carry a lot of things in addition to being large enough to hold a second bag. This second bag was the soft and lightweight Khaki Vintage Paratrooper Shoulder Bag (also sold on amazon). I planned to put the backpack in the overhead compartment, but wanted to be able quickly to remove the messenger bag to keep with me under the seat. The messenger bag was used for items of more immediate need, such as medications, toiletries, video and digital cameras, pens, notebook, and book, to name a few. Among other things, the backpack was able to hold additional medications, a change of clothes, the inflatable First Class Sleeper, the self-inflating Thermarest seat, the carrying cases for my video camera and digital cameras, as well as the chargers for the cameras, my cell phone, and my iPod. All of this plus the messenger bag fit nicely into the backpack.
There were only a couple of problems I found with the bag. The first is that the zippers were small and not easily zipped up. When you are in a hurry, such as in the security line or standing in everyone's way in the airplane aisle, this can be a problem. High Sierra would do better to make this with larger, more easily managed zippers. The second problem was that the many straps can easily get tangled. The only time this caused any problem for me was on the overhead rack on a train. The many straps will fall through racks made of metal bars, rather than flat surfaces, and can become entangled with the bars. Other than that, I found this to be a very good carryon backpack.
Good buy for the casual traveler May 31, 2010 T. Renee (Ohio, USA) I bought this pack to take with me on a series of 3-9 day train trips throughout Europe over the course of 4 months.
Pros:
- Great holding capacity (ie: Berlin = 1 laptop w/charger, 3 pants, 4 t-shirts, 1 hoodie, 1 cardigan, 1 tennis shoes, underwear, 4 small books, small souvenirs)
- Carry-on size
- Comfortable padding and support
Cons:
- Sudden wear and tear
- A zipper broke after 2 months - only 1 zipper currently works
- The seams around the main zipper compartment are coming apart.
This is not the kind of backpack that could hold up to consistent hectic traveling for more than a year. But, it seems to be an ideal bag for casual traveling for a few days. NOT a primary bag for several months of heavy backpacking. So, for my short-term spurts of travel, it held up until nearly the end.
May not be as pictured May 19, 2010 L. Reznick I saw this bag at Filene's last night and I am pretty sure it did not have a padded waist belt as pictured. Instead, it had only a flimsy webbing waist belt. It seems that High Sierra has switched to the thinner, less visible but also less useful waist belt on several models, and lots of retail websites have not yet figured that out. Amazon states that it has a padded waist belt, but unless they have an older version, it doesn't. Amazon should update its pictures and description.

This is the perfect traveling companion. In a time when airlines are charging for checked luggage, you can carry this pack on. You don't have to worry about lost luggage or pay someone to carry it for you. This will be my "suitcase" for many years to come.
