Great Day/Overnight Backpack August 24, 2010 K. Poulson (Salt Lake City, UT) I purchased this backpack because I wanted something a bit bigger than my camelback for day hikes and overnight camping. The backpack is large. I've used it as carry on luggage when I fly and it worked well.
I paired this with a 3 liter platypus hydration bladder and it works well.
The material is strong. The seams are double sewn. Good zippers. It's a cool looking bag as well.
It will hold a small backpacking tent, poles and stakes and my down sleeping bag for an overnight.
I purchased this on line for about $30 - $40 less than at a store.
Great backpack June 29, 2010 Eric (San Francisco, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Currently I'm using this pack for carrying some light stuff (books or small load of groceries) and/or my work laptop between home and office. It's a big, bulky behemoth of a laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T61). I have the hip pad, barrier lining and back bar removed.
This pack is quite comfortable and spacious. I will be using this for future travel to be a carry on item for my camera equipment (my camera bag will probably fit and rest at the bottom of this pack without any problem at all) along with other essential items.
So far its been a winner and I will update this item more towards the end of the year. But so far I have no complaints.
PS: I ordered the all black version, not the green one shown.
Great pack for Travel or Hikeing June 29, 2010 ross henry 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had this pack for a while now, so I feel that I can write a review over it. I ordered this pack primarily for a trip I took to Egypt. I could fit everything I wanted/needed to take with me and did not have to check any luggage. I don't use the kidney belt, but keep in in the pack just in case. It easily removes and is easy to put back on.
The pack does have a pouch for a hydration pack, along with a spot in the top of the pack to run the hose out. Overall the pack is very comfortable to wear fully loaded or not. For travel use, this is a great pack to have as your only source of luggage.
Day hiking this pack is great, but honestly has way more space than I need. This pack is pretty big, bigger than I thought. This isn't a bad thing by any means because you have plenty of room. I do like how you can cinch the pack down via the side straps, for when you don't have a full load or are trying to compress a full load. I haven't tried it yet, but I think that if your setting out on a short overnight hike, you could get away with taking this pack. I'm a minimalist though. I would say you could fit a single person tent, pad, cooking equipment, water, food and a light weight sleeping bag. So in other words, this would make a good pack for the summer months where you don't need to take a lot of fluffy stuff.
Best Travel Bag I've Ever Used June 18, 2010 Jon Douglas (Kailua, HI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my favorite bag. I have had it for about two years (mine is an older model, I'm sure) now and have used it extensively, for both local hiking and camping trips as well as on multi-week trips overseas.
It is larger than a typical day pack, but it fits much more gear than one would think possible; somehow it just keeps expanding when you need it to. The bag is comfortable, well-built, and not so large that you stand out as an obvious tourist. I have spent a lot of time traveling and have used my fair share of backpacks. This bag, in my opinion, is the perfect compromise between big and small. It's not so big that you look silly when when walking through a city, but big enough that you can fit what you need without having to make any major sacrifices (if you want to travel with a cold weather sleeping bag, you won't have much room for anything else in the main compartment, but my 30 degree bag only takes up about 1/4 - 1/3 of the main compartment when laid across the bottom).
I really have no complaints. It is very well built and after a total of about 4 months of traveling with this bag, all zippers, straps, and materials are completely functional and damage free. I don't abuse the pack, but I certainly don't treat it gently, either.
I love this bag and have recommended it to everyone I know who is looking for a backpack. At least one of my friends who bought it based on my recommendation swears by it, as well. Great bag; I highly recommend it.
Pretty Darn Good April 29, 2010 RLG (Newark, DE USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I got this pack for backpacking trips with my Boy Scout troop. I'm just on the south side of 50 and need to start lightening the load to keep up, so I went for a smaller (than I've used in the past) pack that would force me to keep my gear to only what I really need. Took it on the first trip with the boys a couple of weekends ago and was very pleased. I got my pack weight (w/o food and water down to under 25 pounds with tarp and only a little more with tent. This is definitely a pack for going lighter - it wouldn't do well with more than 30 lbs. (but then again, neither do I anymore).
Lots of pockets, attachment points, well-constructed, and a great price, especially on sale. I looked at many other much more expensive packs by some big-name makers and would still have chosen the Redwing 3100 even if it cost as much as those others. It really was exactly what I was looking for for two night weekend trips - its size is just enough if you really do commit to minimalist/lightweight. (I still have four other packs for longer trips or for when my wife goes with me and I need to carry a bigger load.) I have not used it for travel yet, but I have a trip to Colorado for the USAFA graduation (my nephew) next month and might give it a try for my carry-on rather than my rolling duffle.
Highly recommended!
